En la plaza de La Cibeles se encuentra el Banco de España, y 38m bajo tierra su Cámara de Oro, la cámara acorazada que contiene la mayor parte de las reservas de oro españolas, tanto lingotes como monedas antiguas, como el primer maravedí con caracteres latinos, del siglo XII.
Muchas medidas de seguridad protegen el oro, entre ellas una puerta blindada de 16 toneladas, pero la más sorprendente y anecdótica es la relacionada con la fuente más famosa de Madrid, La Cibeles. Y es que en el caso de que se activase la alarma, las puertas de acero se cerrarían automáticamente, los pasillos se sellarían y toda la zona se inundaría por el agua contenida en las cuencas de la Cibeles y por los canales de agua subterráneos que abastecen a la fuente.Nadie ha intentado robar el oro (que se sepa oficialmente), pero el agua está ahí por si a alguien se le ocurre hacerlo ;)
