In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a greyhound for coursing.

The Quixote tells the story of a gentleman in his fifties, from La Mancha, who had gone mad from reading books of chivalry. The protagonist comes to believe that the narratives are realities and decides to seek similar adventures, with the mission of righting wrongs and protecting damsels. In his mind a peasant is a damsel,  flocks of sheep are armies and, of course, the windmills are giants:

"Quijote against the windmill"

MIGUEL DE CERVANTES

Cervantes was born in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares and published the first part of The Quixote  in 1605, as a parody of novels about knights and knighthood. Ten years later he would publish the second part. But despite the success of Don Quixote Cervantes always lived with financial difficulties.

During his youth he lived in Italy, fought at Lepanto and was captive in Algiers. The ransom was paid by the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians of Madrid. Cervantes had bonds with the Order of the Trinitarians and he was buried in the convent after his death in 1616.
