Short History of the San Miguel Market

Mercado de San Miguel (San Miguel Market) is located in the very heart of Madrid, near to Plaza Mayor. It was a food market,  frequented by neighbors that came to do their daily shopping.

The building was finished in 1916, continuing the iron and glass architecture that was developed in the 19th century (Like the Crystal Palace, the Atocha station and even the Communications Palace).

In 2009 the market was open after a renovation and now is unrecognizable, since it was transformed from a traditional market (already obsolete) to a very touristy place for tapas, too touristy you could say, but this is inevitable when something is so well maintained and located.

Tapas and drinks at the Market

There are specialized stalls  for all tastes: seafood, cheeses, meats, olives, wine, paella, croquettes … And best of all, you can order a little in each of them and eat it al together in the central tables. My last choice was ‘papas arrugas’ with twomojos, a toast with ham and salmorejo to go with rebujito, all for € 7.70 (it was a very light meal, you usually spend a lot more money, as is to be expected in a site of these characteristics).
